Sell The Feeling Not The Product
"If you just give enough people
what they want, you'll have everything you want" Zig
Ziglar
That statement should be the foundation in your thinking
when writing any advertisement. Even if you are selling
something that is needed, like a gift for someone else,
what is going to make them want to buy it from you?
We as humans are very ego centered by nature, meaning
bottom line we think about ourselves. When attempting to
attract to a consumer, you must appeal to their ego.
What is your product or service going to do for them?
Lexus does the famous "December to Remember" campaign.
It shows a woman receiving a Lexus for Christmas. The
woman is happy. OK, so the message here is, buy her a
Lexus and she will be happy with you. The same
commercials also show the neighbors looking on, so now
not only have they captured the male consumers ego with
making his wife happy, now his self-esteem has a bigger
boost in that the neighbors see just how great he is.
This same commercial campaign also works in another way,
it creates a buzz. This is one of those advertisements
ladies will talk about, as they find it romantic and
dreamy, whether they have any hope of getting a gift
like that in their driveway or not. Having people talk
about your commercial and/or product is one of the
greatest advantages to the merchant; it's a bonus of
more "free" advertising.
I have to mention the Jared's commercial campaign here
as well. This is one of the cheesiest campaigns I have
seen, yet it gets its point across. "He went to
Jared's". It shows a man giving his lady jewelry and
everyone is whispering about how he went to Jared's.
Again we have the ego stroke but, on the flip side of
that; they show a woman who is not happy with her
husband. Why? Because he didn't go to Jared's so it's
pretty simple you are telling the male consumer you had
better stop by Jared's or go buy a dog house.
Remember romance a person's ego; tell them what is in it
for them. How is it going to make them or their lives
better? Tell them a story they can daydream about,
getting inside their imagination brings you a customer
in reality.
